The afternoon drags on like fingers scraping on a chalkboard. Julia rings up another customer but scans one item twice—the fifth time she’s done it. The man buying toys for his kid checks his phone and huffs. Tremors return to her hands and she stumbles over her words.

“I’m so sorry. I’ll remove the extra item.” She attempts to make the change but gives up. “I can’t remember how to do it, Gwyn.”

“Don’t get upset,” I say, removing the game. “Did you take note of how I did it?”

“Oh, yes. I remember now.” She hands the bag of merchandise to the impatient customer. “Thank you for shopping at Mystic Sage.”

He grunts and rushes out the door. Julia plops on the stool and frowns. “I don’t think I’m ready to go solo yet. You must be so frustrated with me.”

“No. You made a few mistakes today, but you’re performing so well now.”

Shane comes behind the counter and rubs her shoulders. “Pumpkin, you’ve improved so much. Don’t let a few setbacks bother you.”

“I appreciate your confidence,” she says. “But how will I ever manage on my own?”

“Have confidence, Julia. The store is only open for another hour, anyway. Frankly, you may perform better without us hovering.”

Shane embraces her. “Gwyn’s correct. If you forget something, I’m right in the back doing inventory. Just holler.”

A head of wavy, fire-red hair passes under the streetlight outside and enters the store. “Hey, Gwyn. Are you ready to go?” Skye asks. “I want to get back to the apartment for a movie. Zach dropped me off and will be waiting. You’ll need to give me a lift home. Hi, Julia.”

Shane’s girlfriend flashes a smile and waves.

“Yeah. No problem.” I put on my fleece jacket and grab my backpack. “Julia, you’ll do fine. Remember, I stuffed cheat sheets under the counter if you forget anything.”

“Thank you, Gwyn.” She stands up and straightens her blouse. “I’m ready.”

“You sure are, Pumpkin,” Shane says. “I’ll be in the back. Goodnight, ladies.”

“Good luck, Julia,” I say. “You’ll do fine.”

“Thank you, Gwyn,” she replies, folding her hands. “Have a wonderful evening.”

Skye and I stroll to the Celestial Gardens under indigo skies, twinkling stars and a luminous moon lighting our way. The temperature has dropped with the setting of the sun, but the warmth of the day lingers. We arrive at Mitchell Hall in record time and enter through the gate after checking for stray Unremarkables. The Seelie Fae children haven’t crossed over yet, so we approach the mound and yell at the opening.

“Shailagh? Aonghas? We’re here to play for a couple of hours.”

We stand back, preparing for them to cross over. But only the sound of scampering squirrels breaks the silence.

“Maybe they aren’t coming tonight,” Skye says. “I mean, they’ve got those changelings to play with over there now.”

“When has that made a difference?” I ask. “This would be for the first time they didn’t cross over.” I glance at my phone in the dark. “It’s still early. Why don’t we rest on the concrete bench near the fairy fountain?”

“Sure.
